What We Learned: Giants vs. Cowboys

NBC went with the idea of broadcasting one of the better rivalries in the National Football League...and got their money's worth...in the fourth quarter.

The game, as a whole, was arguably one that probably should have been played at 1 p.m. or ESPN3. It left a lot to be desired in terms of quality of play. With that in mind, let's get right into what we've learned about tonight's game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys.

NEW YORK GIANTS

You can essentially sum their performance up with two words. SIX TURNOVERS. The Giants were the gift that kept on giving to Dallas all night long and it took the Cowboys about 48 minutes to realize it.  David Wilson, as some announcers would say, had to be the sickest man in America during their game. Wilson was the first to be infected by the turnover bug with two costly fumbles. Add three Eli Manning interceptions and a muffed punt and you've got the recipe for disaster.

I'm no general manager and I don't have any NFL front office experience, but it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see the Giants go out and work some running backs out this week in light of Wilson's poor performance. One thing Tom Coughlin does not like is a running back who cannot hold on to the football. It will get you in the doghouse. Regardless of what Wilson did, there still a lot of work to be done by that Giants offense. The Giants had 400+ yards passing and less than 100 yards rushing. You can't win games if you can't run the football.  I almost feel like the Giants flat out abandoned the run game...and I can understand why they might, but the truth of the matter is you've got to have some sort of balance in order to have success.

But there were some positives. Well, a positive. The Giants were 6-11 on third down. So, at least they know they can stay on the field. I guess that's something to build on. But I could be wrong. I'm just a guy who writes blogs by night.

DALLAS COWBOYS

Dallas may have won the game, but they also have tons of work to do. While the Cowboys only had an interception and two fumbles (both of which were not lost). It could have been three turnovers for the Cowboys, but they managed to avoid that catastrophe. Furthermore, Dallas was only 5-15 on third down. Their defense, on the other hand, was spot on tonight as they helped the offense win the time of possession battle.

Also, the Cowboys struggled to run the football...something that they have been historically known to do well. However, Emmitt Smith isn't walking through that door. They have to do better in getting their running game to be a factor. It's going to help them tremendously. After all, you don't want your $108 million man chucking the football around 50 times a game.

Another thing I noticed about the Cowboys tonight was pass play selection. A lot of what they ran was short. It was a lot of dink and dunk as they took what the defense gave them. Maybe that was part of the game plan. Maybe not. Still, the fact is they've got to get Dez Bryant and Miles Austin more involved in the vertical game. That may be something we'll see in the coming weeks.

Now that that's out of the way, I hope you all enjoy Monday's doubleheader on ESPN.
