The Washington Redskins have been the topic of discussion as people look to have the name of the football team changed. The term "Redskin" is used as a term to identify an American Indian. While the term is seen as demeaning, it has been the name of the franchise which calls the nation's capital its home.
Everyone has had their take on the situation from Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless...
...to President Barack Obama
While the Redskins aren't having the best of years right now, the one thing we can certainly say is that THIS isn't the reason for it. Here's the issue. There are a certain set of individuals that are not happy with the name...a name that has been the same since 1933. Now, I'm no historian and I haven't been around since 1933, but the uproar behind this issue is probably been at an all-time high right now. I understand that, to some, this can be offensive. And while changing the name may be politically correct, it's only the right thing to do if the name offends an extremely large number of people.
According to a poll by The Associated Press, 79 percent of the people polled favor keeping the Redskins name. I'm not saying the name is right, but they are who they are. Why change it now?
