On the Fast Track

Over the years, college football has evolved to become arguably one of the greatest games this country has seen.

It's not just because it's football. Some say that it's the passion that these athletes have as they play under the bright spotlight week in and week out for a national championship. The game continues to grow every week as it continues to pick up fans by the truckload. Thanks to the emergence of College Gameday, the use of the BCS system and even the number of uniforms a team has, college football will continue to be a favorite in the eyes of many sports fans.

Among the reasons for the game's growth is the use of neutral site games and, in 2016, college football might have their biggest neutral site game ever.

According to reports, Tennessee and Virginia Tech will play at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2016. The game could draw as many as 160,000 fans according to ESPN.  It's a great idea, but the question I have looks at the prestige of these two programs? Will these two programs be good enough to draw that many fans? We're not talking Ohio State or Southern Cal here. The Vols and the Hokies have good quality programs, but their tradition isn't the type that draws those kind of numbers.

Should the NCAA pull this off, it raises the bar for neutral site games. It may even raise the bar for what the NFL can do with Super Bowls. Could you imagine having 160,000 fans at a Super Bowl? It may be worth considering, Roger Goodell.
