Ray Lewis Plays Defense...again

Ahmad Brooks was flagged on Sunday for what was deemed as an illegal tackle on Drew Brees in the San Franciso 49ers' game against the New Orleans Saints.

I saw the play and I personally didn't think it was a penalty, but I'm not an official and I know the NFL is just doing their best to protect the quarterbacks, but this was not a punishable offense. See for yourself.

Then, this happened on Monday...

Ray Lewis to the rescue.

It hasn't been confirmed that Brooks will be fine and we all know that these calls happen so fast and they're judgment calls, but it's a huge gesture for Ray Lewis to go on national television and help a player with a fine for "doing his job."

Yeah, maybe the NFL has gotten a little softer. Actually, it has gotten softer. But they're doing it for the safety of the players. My concern is that the safety of the players takes away from the quality of the game. I'm not saying I don't want the players to be safe, but I want to officials to understand that these players know what they signed up for.

That being said, Ray Lewis can't and won't do this for everybody. We still got about seven weeks to go in the regular season. But Ray is right. This is bad for business and the NFL needs to loosen up a little. Quarterbacks can't get anywhere, it seems, without a yellow flag being thrown. Might as well let the defense count "Mississippis" before rushing...
