Welker Won't Return Money Received in Derby Error

I'm not a big fan of horse racing and I rarely gamble, but I've got to give kudos to Wes Welker.

The Denver Broncos receiver hit the jackpot at the Kentucky Derby and decided to spread the wealth as he handed out $100 bills. While it seems that Welker could just easily afford to do so with an NFL salary, he could definitely afford to do so now knowing that Churchill Downs overpaid him and his friend for their bet.

According to reports, Welker and his friend were given about $14,000 more than they were supposed to following the win. Now, the powers that be are hoping that Welker will return the money.

""It was clearly an innocent mistake on both ends," Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers said. "We had a mutuel clerk and a tote technician accidentally overpay a patron on Kentucky Derby Day, an individual who walked away unknowingly with a $14,000 overpayment."

Word now is that Welker won't be sending that money back anytime soon. According to a report from CBSSports.com, the former New England Patriot feels that Churchill Downs "Churchill Downs wouldn't have contacted him if he'd been underpaid so it's not fair to demand money in return for a mistake." As a guy not working on a NFL salary, how can I sit here and blame Welker for feeling the way he feels? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most average joes probably keep the money whether they had knowledge that Churchill Downs made the error.

I know. You're probably thinking I have such poor judgment and I should think better, but let's face it. If it were you, I'd say you'd probably do what Welker did. And if you're thinking, "Well, Welker makes more than enough money. He doesn't need it," let me say this. Part of the money that was invested belonged to Welker and he has every right to keep what was given. It's not his fault that somebody failed to do the math. Again, if the tables were turned and Churchill Downs underpaid him, this wouldn't be much of a story because Churchill Downs, more than likely, wouldn't say a peep.

Keep making it rain, Welker. Keep making it rain.
