I really did. I know they just drafted Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert in the first round...and that's all well and good. It's the great start for their draft, but then Friday came along and the Browns...well, they decided to be the Browns.
According to reports, Browns receiver Josh Gordon could receive a season ban after failing a second drug test in the league. The violation and possible suspension, as reported by various news outlets, was known by Browns executives.
So, that brings us to this. Sammy Watkins was passed up in the first round for Manziel and Gilbert, which I guess I can't argue to some degree. However, the Browns did not do themselves too many favors when they didn't pick up a wide receiver in the second round (which is a need according to ProFootballTalk.com).
Maybe I'm overreacting. After all, the experts say that this draft is a deep draft for wide receivers. Guys like Martavis Bryant and Bruce Ellington are still on the board along with other great prospects. (Forgive my South Carolina bias for listing those two state products.) I'm no Browns fan, but you've got to think that they're scratching their heads wondering why they haven't picked a wide out for Johnny Cleveland to throw the ball to knowing there are four (or three, depending on how you look at it) wide receivers currently on the roster.
Right now, Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel have basically no one to throw to except maybe themselves. The Browns may have done more harm than good at this point. But this is the Browns. What else should we have expected?
To me (and, again, maybe I'm jumping the gun here), it just seems like mismanagement has reared its ugly head as the Cleveland Browns try to detach the stigma of being one of the NFL's worst teams from themselves. Unless the Browns know something we don't know about these receivers, it could be a long, long season before we get back to this point again for Cleveland fans.
