Baseball Needs a New Twist for 162-Game Season

I love baseball...but I haven't watched one game since the season started this year.

To me, starting a season in April and playing through October is a little much for my attention span. If you're lucky, you're talking about 1,458 innings of regulation baseball before you even reach the playoffs.

To me, it's difficult to get excited about baseball before the All-Star break. Don't get me wrong. I know it's necessary if a team even wants to have an All-Star break, but it's not really all that meaningful outside of that.

Once the Midsummer Classic is over, the heat picks up and the season really get into gear. So, how can Major League Baseball spice up the first half of the season? Yeah, more interleague play is nice...but let's give teams something to really play for. Surely, Bud Selig and his men can come up with something to give people a reason to care about the season during the spring.

Basketball is only half as long and they're considering a mid-season tournament just to keep players competitive juices in high gear all year long. If the NBA can adapt, I'm sure that baseball has to be thinking of something. The games aren't getting any shorter with instant replay challenges and you've got to keep fans interested.

I don't care if it's something as simple as putting a baserunner on first and seeing if a catcher can keep him from reaching third as an exhibition during the middle of the year. Major League Baseball needs to step their game up.

Until that happens, I suppose I can just wait around and enjoy the rest of the year. So buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack...and let's get to the playoffs!
